Microsuction Earwax Removal

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is a gentle and effective method of removing excess ear wax using a small suction device and a fine probe. It is considered one of the safest techniques and is commonly used by hearing care professionals.

At D H Roberts Pharmacy, our trained clinicians are fully qualified to perform microsuction using guidance from accredited training providers.

Please note: Microsuction may not be suitable for everyone. If you have a perforated eardrum, experience frequent ear infections, or have certain ear conditions, our pharmacist will assess whether this procedure is appropriate for you.

How Does Microsuction Work?

1. Initial Assessment

Our trained clinician will ask you some medical questions to ensure microsuction is safe and appropriate for you.

2. Explanation of the Procedure

We’ll outline any potential risks and confirm you’re happy to proceed.

3. Examination

Using an otoscope (a magnifying tool with a light), we’ll check the condition and softness of the wax in your ears.

4. Wax Removal

If the wax is soft enough, a small suction device and probe will be gently inserted to remove the wax.

Can microsuction damage your ears?

Microsuction is a safe and effective way to remove ear wax when performed by a trained professional. Your appointment will last around 30 minutes, including a short health check and the procedure itself.

The process is usually painless, though it can be noisy or slightly uncomfortable. Let your clinician know if you feel any discomfort.

After removal, sounds may seem sharper, and you might notice mild ringing or buzzing — this usually settles within a day or two. Your clinician will explain any side effects before starting.
