Rabies Vaccination

The rabies vaccine provides protection against a potentially fatal viral infection spread through the bite or scratch of an infected animal.

It is recommended for travellers visiting areas where rabies is present, especially if they plan to spend time in rural settings, work with animals, or may have limited access to emergency medical care.

What is Rabies & How is it Spread?

Rabies is a life-threatening viral infection transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, typically through bites or scratches. It affects the nervous system and, once symptoms appear, is almost always fatal.

Rabies is found in many parts of the world, including:

  • Large areas of Africa and Asia

  • Parts of Central and South America

  • The Middle East and Eastern Europe

  • Some Caribbean and Pacific regions

Travellers at higher risk include those spending extended time outdoors, visiting remote areas, or working closely with animals such as dogs, bats, and monkeys.
Vaccination offers vital protection by priming the immune system and reducing the risk of severe illness.

For more information, speak to our pharmacy team or visit the NHS website.
