Meningitis B Vaccination
The Meningitis B vaccine helps protect against a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
It is recommended for young children, adolescents, and travellers at increased risk, particularly those visiting areas where meningococcal disease is more common or who will be in close-contact environments.
What is Meningitis B & How is it Spread?
Meningitis B is caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B bacteria, which can lead to severe infections such as meningitis and septicaemia. It spreads through close contact, such as coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing utensils.
Although relatively rare in the UK due to routine vaccination in infants, Meningitis B still poses a risk, especially for unvaccinated individuals and those travelling or living in group settings like university halls or military bases.
