Cholera Vaccination
The cholera vaccine helps protect against cholera, a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water.
It is especially recommended for travellers visiting areas with limited sanitation or those involved in humanitarian or disaster relief work.
What is Cholera & How is it Spread?
Cholera is a bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration. It spreads through ingestion of food or water contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacteria.
It is most common in areas with poor access to clean water and sanitation, including parts of:
-
Africa
-
South and Southeast Asia
-
Central and South America
-
The Middle East
Travellers at higher risk include those staying in rural areas, backpacking, or working in healthcare or emergency aid roles.
The cholera vaccine reduces the risk of serious illness and supports safer travel in high-risk regions. For more guidance, consult our pharmacy team or visit the NHS website.
