Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination

The Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine helps protect against a serious viral infection spread through mosquito bites, especially in rural or agricultural areas of Asia and the Western Pacific.

It is recommended for travellers spending extended time outdoors, visiting endemic regions, or staying in high-risk areas for long periods.

What is Japanese Encephalitis & How is it Spread?

Japanese Encephalitis is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). While rare, it can lead to severe complications including long-term neurological damage or death.

The virus is most commonly found in:

  • Southeast Asia

  • Parts of the Indian subcontinent

  • China, Japan, and Korea

  • Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait region of Australia

Travellers at risk include those visiting rural areas, especially during the rainy season when mosquitoes are most active. The vaccine significantly reduces the risk of infection and is especially important for longer stays or repeat travel to high-risk regions.

For more information, consult your pharmacist or visit the NHS website.
