Whooping Cough Vaccination

The whooping cough vaccine helps protect against pertussis, a highly contagious bacterial infection that can cause severe coughing fits and breathing difficulties.

It is especially recommended during pregnancy to protect newborn babies and for individuals in close contact with infants.

What is Whooping Cough & How is it Spread?

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial infection that spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact with an infected person. It can cause violent coughing spells, vomiting, and difficulty breathing — particularly dangerous for babies and young children.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent whooping cough. It is especially important for pregnant women, typically given between 16 and 32 weeks of pregnancy, as it helps pass protective antibodies to the baby before birth. Others who may benefit include partners, carers, and anyone spending time around newborns.

For further advice, speak to our pharmacy team or visit the NHS website.
